A Legacy of Faith and Community

Established in 1865, Second Missionary Baptist Church (SMBC) stands as one of Jackson, Michigan’s most enduring and historically significant African American congregations. Its inception traces back to George and Sarah Green, who opened their Pearl Street home for worship, laying the foundation for a church that would become a cornerstone of spiritual life and social progress in the region.

Throughout its history, SMBC has exemplified resilience and commitment to community upliftment. The church has been instrumental in fostering leadership, with several pastors and members contributing to both religious and civic spheres. Notably, Rev. Richard Bassett, an early pastor, was elected to the Michigan State Legislature in 1892, becoming one of the first African Americans to hold such a position in the state.

The church’s physical journey mirrors its spiritual one. From humble beginnings in the Greens’ home, the congregation moved to various locations, each transition marking growth and adaptation. In 1953, under the leadership of Rev. J.W. Carr, SMBC dedicated its current edifice at 304 E. Prospect Street, a testament to the congregation’s dedication and unity.

Beyond its congregational services, SMBC has been a beacon for cultural and educational initiatives. The church actively participates in community events, such as the annual “Jackson’s African American Historical Figures Brought to Life,” highlighting its role in preserving and celebrating local heritage.

Today, under the guidance of Pastor Darius L. Williams, Second Missionary Baptist Church continues its mission of spiritual enrichment, community service, and cultural preservation. With a legacy spanning over 150 years, SMBC remains a vital institution, following Jesus, nurturing faith and fostering unity in Jackson and beyond.
